Alright, so now that we know the basics about a nutritious diet, let’s delve deeper into what makes our food nutritious – nutrients! Nutrients are the chemical building blocks to our food. They give us energy, make food good for us (or bad for us), and are critical for human functioning and growth. There are six different types of nutrients that are found in the foods we eat:

  1. Carbohydrates
  2. Lipids (fats)
  3. Proteins
  4. Vitamins
  5. Minerals
  6. Water – the most important nutrient for our body!

Only three of these nutrients provide the body with energy: carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Together these nutrients are called macronutrients. Macro means “large” and our bodies need relatively large amounts of these nutrients to support normal function and health.
